 Credit: John Swannell
We are so excited to have Sophie Kinsella back at CLC! She is always a delight to chat with and we learn something new about her every time. Her latest rom com, The Burnout, releases in a week from today and it's currently in Melissa's five book pile (closer to the top). Thanks to The Dial Press, we have THREE copies for some lucky readers!

Sophie Kinsella is the author of the bestselling Shopaholic series, as well as the novels Can You Keep a Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess, Remember Me?, Twenties Girl, I've Got Your Number, Wedding Night, My Not So Perfect Life, Surprise MeI Owe You One, Love Your Life, and The Party Crasher. She lives in London.

Synopsis:
She can do anything . . . just not everything.

Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, “urgent” (but obviously not at all urgent) email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasn’t seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall.

Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But it’s the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn, who seems as stressed as Sasha. How can she commune with nature when he’s sitting on her favorite rock, watching her? Nor can they agree on how best to alleviate their burnout (Sasha: manifesting, wild swimming; Finn: drinking whisky, getting pizza delivered to the beach).

When curious messages, seemingly addressed to Sasha and Finn, begin to appear on the beach, the two are forced to talk—about everything. How did they get so burned out? Can either of them remember something they used to love? (Answer: surfing!) And the question they try and fail to ignore: what does the energy between them—flaring even in the face of their bone-deep exhaustion—signify? (Courtesy of Amazon.)

The Burnout is a glorious off-season holiday love story that will sweep you off your feet. Funny, feel-good, touching, and full of the bittersweet, incisive wit that puts every Sophie Kinsella novel in a league of its own. I could not have loved it more.”
—Lisa Jewell, New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone

“I devoured The Burnout in one greedy gulp. Funny, sad, relatable, and so brilliantly done. Sophie Kinsella is the queen of romantic comedy.”
—Jojo Moyes, New York Times bestselling author of Someone Else’s Shoes

What would you tell the debut novelist version of yourself?
I would say ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff, everything will turn out OK.’ But I wouldn’t reveal anything else – no spoilers!

What is something you learned from writing your other books that you would apply to The Burnout?
Over the years I have learned to write and rewrite my comedy scenes until they make me laugh out loud. There were definitely scenes in The Burnout that made me laugh while writing!

If The Burnout were made into a movie, who would you cast in the lead roles?
I would cast Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Sasha and Bill Nighy as Herbert but I’m not sure about Finn – I’ll take suggestions!

When was the last time you felt burned out?
A few years ago now, I became so burned out that I had to take some time off writing. I felt generally frazzled and every small task seemed impossible, so I drew on that experience to write Sasha’s journey.

If your life were a TV series, which celebrity would you want to narrate it?
I would choose Julia Louis-Dreyfus as I think she is hilarious.

If we were to visit you right now, what are some places you would take us to see?

We would go shopping at Liberty, the most beautiful shop in London, then for tea at Fortnum & Mason. The next day we would go to Hampton Court and get lost in the maze there.

Thanks to Sophie for chatting with us and to The Dial Press for sharing her book with our readers.

  3. I don't know the specific date, but it generally happens around August/September after having to manually water my garden since April, three days a week. It gets tiring after awhile. I'm always wishing for rain.
