Book Review: The Scam

By Sara Steven

No one can be trusted….

Amongst the wealth and glitter of St Tropez, Sky Kennedy is living her best life, with the perfect man by her side. Rich and gorgeous, Karim has shown her a world she could have barely imagined, and she doesn’t want it to end.

So when Karim suddenly sends her packing back to the UK, Sky is shocked - what could she have done to upset Karim? And will she ever see him again?

Ryan Callahan has been tracking Karim for years and will do anything to bring the man down. He knows Karim is using Sky for his own ends and can’t believe another young woman has fallen for Karim’s lies. But maybe Sky could be the perfect bait to snare Karim once and for all…

But Sky’s no fool and she won’t be played by either man. Because maybe there is a twist in this tale that no one saw coming…. (Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads)

The Scam is a classic crime mystery thriller, with unconventional romance thrown in for good measure! On the one hand, Sky is drawn to Karim–Sky has always felt like she’s a bit of a wallflower in her life, and she’s over the moon that Karim has looked past that, making her feel as though she’s the most important woman in the entire world. But then there’s Ryan, a man who threatens the potential Sky has with Karim, yet there’s something about Ryan that Sky can’t help but feel attracted to. It was interesting to see the contrasting emotions Sky develops towards Karim and Ryan both, for different reasons.

When Sky does whatever it takes to find out the ultimate truth about Karim and what he’s hiding, it was suspenseful and made me nervous. I wasn’t sure what might happen to Sky in the process of that, or if she’d even be able to pull it off.  Particularly with the scenes where Sky and Karim communicate, I wondered if she might give something away, and what that would mean for her safety. Ryan is there as her net of sorts, but I always felt a heightened sense of unease when Sky and Karim were together. Knowing what Sky is thinking and hearing about the experiences from her own perspective only added to that unease.

There were a few twists and turns within The Scam. One such twist felt like it had completely come out of left field when dealing with familial matters for Sky. I did not see that coming! But, it made sense and threaded in nicely with the storyline and highlighted why Sky ended up in the predicament she finds herself in.

Will Sky see past Karim’s indiscretions, or will she side with Ryan? And what is Sky hiding? It was a roller coaster ride from start to finish, a definite five-star experience!
