Book Review: Blue Skies

By Cindy Roesel

In Alana Oxford's novella, BLUE SKIES, Patrice takes her two pomeranians, Mr. Muffins and Dolly to the park everyday and after they've done their thing, they all go home. But this day was different. Something caught Mr. Muffins attention and off he went, slipping out of his leash and running away from a terrified Patrice. Suddenly there was a young man airborne off his bench tumbling down to pick up a very surprised Mr. Muffins.

Patrice finds him in the arms of a man in cargo shorts with his knees scuffed up. When he goes to give Patrice her dog she notices he has nice brown eyes, sandy hair that could use a trim, he was rocking "a stocky dad-bod look, but it wasn't unappealing." They trade names, his Seth and after thanking him she asks why he's carrying an umbrella on such a sunny day. He tells her to open it, and she sees blue skies and puffy clouds. Seth tells her it was a gift from a friend who passed away. Before he passed he, Seth says his friend made it because you're always going to have sh*t days so "I gotta make my own blue skies." They connect on the spot. Then Mr. Muffins pees on Seth, horrifying Patrice who suggests they go to her nearby apartment and wash his clothes and he can shower. They're in Michigan, so...

When he finishes Patrice is seeing stars everywhere. So, they decide to meet up at friend's band gig Friday and she tells him to bring friends. When they meet up Seth's there with his sister and her fiance who is the same guy who cheated and broke her heart in college. It's over before it begins. Patrice can't date Seth ... or so she thinks.

This is a novella, so everything moves at a fast pace, but Alana is able to create characters who really struggle through a very complicated situation and come out on the other side. She also made Patrice a size 14 which isn't the usual size of a heroine. I felt that made BLUE SKIES more inclusive.

Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for the book in exchange for an honest review.
