Spotlight and Giveaway: You and Me and Us

We're pleased to feature You and Me and Us by Alison Hammer, which publishes tomorrow. We've been hearing some good buzz about this novel and are excited to share it with you today. Thanks to SparkPoint Studio, we have one copy to give away!

The heartbreaking, yet hopeful, story of a mother and daughter struggling to be a family without the one person who holds them together—a perfect summer read for fans of Jojo Moyes and Marisa de los Santos.

Alexis Gold knows how to put the “work” in working mom. It’s the “mom” part that she’s been struggling with lately. Since opening her own advertising agency three years ago, Alexis has all but given up on finding a good work/life balance. Instead, she’s handed over the household reins to her supportive, loving partner, Tommy. While he’s quick to say they divide and conquer, Alexis knows that Tommy does most of the heavy lifting—especially when it comes to their teenage daughter, CeCe.

Their world changes in an instant when Tommy receives a terminal cancer diagnosis, and Alexis realizes everything she’s worked relentlessly for doesn’t matter without him. So Alexis does what Tommy has done for her almost every day since they were twelve-year-old kids in Destin, Florida—she puts him first. And when the only thing Tommy wants is to spend one last summer together at “their” beach, she puts her career on hold to make it happen…even if it means putting her family within striking distance of Tommy’s ex, an actress CeCe idolizes.

But Alexis and Tommy aren’t the only ones whose lives have been turned inside out. In addition to dealing with the normal ups and downs that come with being a teenager, CeCe is also forced to confront her feelings about Tommy’s illness—and what will happen when the one person who’s always been there for her is gone. When the magic of first love brings a bright spot to her summer, CeCe is determined not to let her mother ruin that for her, too.

As CeCe’s behavior becomes more rebellious, Alexis realizes the only thing harder for her than losing Tommy will be convincing CeCe to give her one more chance.

You and Me and Us is a beautifully written novel that examines the unexpected ways loss teaches us how to love.

“Hammer is an expert at both tugging heartstrings and keeping the reader utterly immersed in a world of hope and heartbreak. A great new voice in women’s fiction.”

My life was on hold when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. All of my strength and energy was concentrated on the treatments and surviving. Then once again my life was on hold when I was diagnosed with RA until my meds were worked out. Survived both and feeling much better.

My life was on hold about a little over threes years ago when my late husband had Stage 4 Kidney Cancer and I was his care giver. I would have done anything to make him get better but I lost him to it, I do miss him every minute of every day. Thanks for this amazing giveaway.

That's a very interesting question. Had to think about it. I guess for me, it was becoming a single parent when my marriage failed. With having so many demands on my energy & time for 20 years, I put a lot of my life on hold. Goodbye social life (many friends didn't understand) & self-care was an afterthought. It's been hard to get bsck to where I once was. But on the bright side my boys grew up to be terrific men & all the hard work/sacrifice was so worth it. Even though I was often exhausted & sometimes sad, I have no regrets. Thanks for the chance. 🙂

I spent most of my teen years being rebellious. I did grow out of it.

To a small extent, I am putting part of my life on hold now as we all stay at home to protect ourselves as well as others.

I put my life on hold last October for 12 weeks to help my Sister after she had back surgery and I stayed with her in Michigan.

My father had had a heart attack and then a year and a half later he had a stroke and then four months later my mother had the first of two aortic aneurysms in six months. I was there to help. A few yrs later the one of my siblings who was the main caretaker had a major health issue. I would come in to where they live (about 40 min away) and I would take them to their appts or get their groceries or where ever they needed. I did this for 9 months until my brother was given the all clear. After that I did not just drop off the site because my brother still had the health issue and does to this day. I too have a health issue but I put that to the back to help with them.

I suppose I put a lot of things on hold when I got pregnant and chose to raise my son as a single parent but, for the most part, I don't really consider it a problem for me. He is now 36 and a wonderful man.
