When I first heard about Hey Ladies! by Michelle Markowitz and Caroline Moss, I knew we had to feature it at CLC this spring. I'm so glad to have both ladies here to answer questions for Food month. Synopsis:
Based on the column of the same name that appeared in The Toast, Hey Ladies! is a laugh-out-loud read that follows a fictitious group of eight 20-and-30-something female friends for one year of holidays, summer house rentals, dates, brunches, breakups, and, of course, the planning of a disastrous wedding. This instantly relatable story is told entirely through emails, texts, DMs, and every other form of communication known to man.
The women in the book are stand-ins for annoying friends that we all have. There’s Nicole, who’s always broke and tries to pay for things in Forever21 gift cards. There’s Katie, the self-important budding journalist, who thinks a retweet and a byline are the same thing. And there’s Jen, the DIY suburban bride-to-be. With a perfectly pitched sardonic tone, Hey Ladies! will have you cringing and laughing as you recognize your own friends, and even yourself. (Courtesy of Amazon.)
What is your favorite cuisine?
Michelle Markowitz: Mexican, for sure. Preferably served out of a truck in a parking lot where you need a million napkins to eat a single taco.
Caroline Moss: Mine is a toss up between Italian food (pasta more than pizza, though) or burgers.
What snack would be a good pairing with Hey, Ladies!?
MM: Does wine count as a snack?
CM: Popcorn. It feels like the appropriate food to eat while watching drama go down in someone else's inbox.
What is a food everyone else likes but you won't even touch?
MM:This makes no sense to anyone, even me, but I am not a fan of chocolate chip cookies!
CM: Won't even touch...hm...I don't think I would say I "won't even touch" ice cream, but ice cream is something I rarely crave.
What is your go-to restaurant?
MM: There is an Italian restaurant in my sister's neighborhood that has the best food and the worst service, and I am always pushing for it when ordering in.
CM: Any 24-hour diner!
What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten?
MM: I've recently become a fan of a slice of pizza with cold mozzarella on top and then sriracha on top of that! Delicious!
CM: I can't think of something so out of left field but I do know that as a kid my parents convinced me to eat calamari by telling me it was French fries and it worked. (I found out later, but I was too big a fan of the food to think too hard about eating octopus and squid.)
What is your favorite comfort food?
MM: Anything in the key of carbs.
CM: Soft scrambled eggs with cheese. Every time.
