Something interesting about Kate's website is that she has a pen pal project. She and author Reva Seth have been posting the letters they write to each other on their websites. If you've ever had a pen pal when you were younger, you'll definitely enjoy this glimpse into their lives.
Before turning to fiction, Kate worked in law, higher education, public relations and major gift fundraising. She has an English degree from McGill University and a Law degree from the University of Toronto.
Kate is a working mother, a community volunteer, a voracious reader and a pretty decent cook. On good days, she thinks she might have it all. On bad days, she wants a nap. Kate lives with her family in Toronto. You can find her at her website, Facebook, and Twitter.
Synopsis of The Hole in the Middle:
Sophie Whelan is the kind of woman who prides herself on doing it all. In a single day, she can host a vegan-friendly and lactose-free dinner for ten, thwart a PTA president intent on forcing her to volunteer, and outwit her hostile ‘assistant’ in order to get her work done on time.
With her fortieth birthday looming, and her carefully coordinated existence beginning to come apart at the seams, Sophie begins feeling like she needs more from her life—and especially from her husband, Jesse.
The last thing Sophie needs is a new complication in her life. But when an opportunity from her past suddenly reappears, Sophie is forced to confront the choices she’s made and decide if her chaotic life is really a dream come true—or the biggest mistake she’s ever made…
To me, beauty is:
Confidence, grace, and intelligence. It’s being comfortable in your own skin, and embracing a style that is uniquely yours.
What is your favorite fashion magazine?
In truth, I don’t usually read fashion magazines except on planes, at the dentist, or when I’m having my highlights done. But I get very excited if I happen to find a copy of British Vogue in any of those locations. Or the Vogue September Issue, obviously.
Do you have a signature style?
I wear a lot of sweet, feminine dresses that tend toward retro elegance with a touch of whimsy. I also love big, sparkly statement necklaces. I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to accessories.
Which celebrity has the best style?
Tilda Swinton is just cool. If I were tall and thin and androgynous-looking, I’d dress like she does. Since I’m not any of those things, I tend more toward the Audrey Hepburn look.
Which brand of cosmetics do you use most often?
I buy cosmetics from Gee Beauty (a local shop run by a mother and her three daughters). I’m in my forties, so skin care is a huge part of my cosmetic life now.
What is your favorite TV show that features fashion or beauty?
Mad Men. My god, the dresses!
Thanks to Kate for a wonderful visit and to Berkley/NAL for sharing her book with our readers.
