Book Review and Giveaway: I Don’t Know What You Know Me From (Confessions of a Co-Star)

By Sara Steven

**Giveaway is now closed**

When I first saw Judy Greer on the big screen, I was watching What Women Want. She’s Erin the file girl, and I remember thinking, “Who’s that actress? What else have I seen her in?” I had the same reaction when I saw The Wedding Planner, and 13 Going on 30. It would be insanely hard not to take notice of the fantastic acting chops Greer possesses. Even when she’s devilishly bitchy like in "13." Only problem is, I still didn’t know her name. Not even after seeing her in Arrested Development (I was late to the game and watched it all for the first time on Netflix), or in the recent Sprint commercials. My husband is a huge fan of Archer and even he had no clue who does the voice of Cheryl!

We’re not alone. In I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star, Greer fills us in on what it’s like to be highly recognizable but not well known. People approach her all the time and want to know what movies she’s been in, and she takes it in stride, even when they suggest a film she’s never been in but swears they’ve seen her in. Reading her confessions is like sitting down with your best friend on a lazy Sunday afternoon, eating pizza and ice cream straight out of the carton and discovering just what makes Greer so undeniably cool. From her childhood in Michigan to the time she spent peeing in a stall next to Jennifer Lopez, or the unfortunate mishaps during an Oscar night, there is no sugar coating what Greer experiences. It’s blunt and very real. And quirky, just like you’d imagine her to be. Who would have known how obsessed she is with Target? The fact that she’s very down to earth despite the fame makes her super likeable.

This book is written in essay format and focuses more on Greer’s experiences, not on dishing the dirt. Don’t expect a cheap, grossly exaggerated tell-all. It gives you just enough to whet that celebrity gossip palate without going overboard or taking away from it’s primary objective: making you laugh, and learning a lot more about the girl who is everyone’s best friend.

  8. I usually don't know their names either. And, that would count for oh, so many actors. I can't place them. There are a lot on Law & Order that guest star but again, I don't know their names. Like Rainn Wison. He's been in ton's of things but, nope, I never get it right.

  13. I love seeing major actors back in their obscure days, when they were guest starring as the murder victims! Fun to back track and see their less glamorous roles.

I loved Justin Chambers in The Wedding Planner before Grey's Anatomy.

  15. Cool question, I'm terrible with that kind of stuff. I used to have trouble with Harvey Keitel but I finally got him figured out. Now it's just everybody else.

  20. Nick Searcy...no idea who he is, right? He's the guy who played Tom Hanks' best friend in Castaway, was in One Hour Photo with Robin Williams, and recently in Justified. But I bet you still have no idea who he is.

  28. I would love to read this! There's a movie called "That Guy...Who Was in That Thing" that's about the actors you know by face but not by name. For me it's Austin Pendleton, J. K. Simmons, David Paymer, John Michael Higgins.

  29. Kyra Sedgwick! I can never remember her name.

  30. Living in Los Angeles, I run into actors whose faces I know, but not their names all the time. Whenever this happens, I always want to say hi to them because they seem like an old friend whom I've lost touch with over the years. But I practice restraint and just smile and nod. They usually respond in kind. Judy Greer, on the other hand, I have never run into, which is crazy because she is everywhere!
