Book Review: Fractured

By Melissa Amster

I am always intrigued by time travel and whenever it is featured in a chick lit novel, I am more than eager to get my hands on that book! Fractured, by Dani Atkins, stood out to me in this way, as it has a different spin on the concept, giving it a Sliding Doors feel.

What would you do if life gave you a second chance?

The night of the accident changed everything... Now, five years on, Rachel's life is crumbling. She lives alone in a tiny flat, working in a dead-end job, desperate with guilt over her best friend's death. She would give anything to turn back the clock. But life doesn't work like that... Does it?

The night of the accident was a lucky escape... Now, five years on, Rachel's life is perfect. She has a wonderful fiancé, loving family and friends around her, and the career she always wanted. But why can't Rachel shake the memory of a very different life?

All I really need to say right now is that I loved this book and you should get it and read it from start to finish in one sitting! However, I will gladly explain why. I felt the time travel aspect was creative and well done. I'd think things were happening one way, and then something would happen to change all that. There were little surprises throughout the story to make the reader believe that Rachel isn't crazy after all. The dialogue and interactions are excellent and it is easy to see which characters and relationships to root for. Dani's use of description made the story come alive in front of my eyes. The romantic aspect made my heart flutter. I was captivated the entire time and then completely blown away, left reeling afterward.

I have no constructive feedback to offer, as I liked everything about Fractured. I still can't believe it was a debut novel, as it was so strongly written. Dani was so invested in her characters and the plot, allowing readers to do the same. It would make an awesome movie, but the only casting I could come up with is that Lily Collins has to play Rachel. Anyone else can be unknown or relatively new actors and actresses. I highly recommend this novel and hope you will get a chance to read it soon!

Thanks to Head of Zeus for the book in exchange for an honest review. They are doing a WORLDWIDE giveaway along with Dani's interview! It will be published in the US in May, 2014 as Then and Always.

  1. Oh great! I’m glad this is a time travel novel. The devastation suffered by the heroine would be endless unless something “different” happens. Looking forward to reading this Melissa! Thanks for sharing.

  2. This is going in my Amazon cart right away. Alternate paths, time travel... those ideas are SO hard to pull off, so I can't wait to see how Dani pulls it off so well. Thanks for the review!
