No surprise here: I am a romantic! I love reading the wedding announcements in the newspapers, especially The Sunday New York Times. So imagine my excitement when the real NYT “Vows” columnist, Devan Sipher, came out with his debut novel, THE WEDDING BEAT. I dove right in.
Gavin Greene is a hopeless romantic and journalist working for the Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, THE PAPER in New York City. He doesn’t cover sports or stocks, he covers weddings. Sound familiar? Gavin Greene covers the kinds of weddings we read about in newspapers and see on E News! The brides hire publicists to make sure Gavin writes their story and gets them lots of publicity. But being a single reporter every Saturday night at someone else’s wedding gets old until one New Years Eve when Gavin encounters Melinda. They briefly meet, magic sparks and then she’s gone off into the night. For Gavin everything changes.
I like that THE WEDDING BEAT is told from a guy’s perspective. He just wants to fall in love with the woman of his dreams. Gavin goes through so many emotions, as well as has to deal with half a dozen dysfunctional family members that could easily provide enough material for another book. This is exactly what any woman would be going through in any other chick-lit novel, but it’s a guy. It’s an interesting unusual perspective.
Anyway, even though he’s a guy, he’s not immune from lots of drama and THE WEDDING BEAT provides plenty of that before leading both Gavin and readers to our happily ever after endings.
THE WEDDING BEAT is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle.
