Melissa A met Anna David after seeing her book on the LibraryThing early reviewers list. She knew that we HAD to invite Anna to visit CLC. Anna is no stranger to chick lit after publishing "Party Girl" in 2007 and "Bought" in 2009. Her latest novel, "Falling For Me" is her memoir about following the advice in Helen Gurley Brown’s 1962 book "Sex and the Single Girl." A contributor to The Daily Beast, Details and Maxim, Anna is currently the Executive Editor of the addiction and recovery website The Fix and is considered an addiction expert by colleges across the country who hire her to come give lectures about addiction and recovery. (She should come talk to us about our book addictions!)
Anna is here to celebrate her publication day by making us laugh about all the things she thinks are so funny! She also has one copy of "Falling for Me" to give to a lucky reader in the US, courtesy of HarperCollins.
You can find Anna at Twitter, Facebook and her website. Come on by and find out why we're becoming addicted to her wonderful personality!
Funniest chick lit novel?
"Rachel’s Holiday" by Marian Keyes. It’s about an Irish girl getting sober and I read it right when I was realizing I had a problem with addiction. I remember saying to myself, “If sobriety can be even half as hilarious as it is in this book, I have nothing to fear.” The book was an inspiration to me for my first book, "Party Girl" because it had taught me that novels about addiction didn’t have to be solely dark and filled with doomsday prophecies.
Funniest book character (chick lit or any kind)?
John Self in "Money" by Martin Amis. As far as I’m concerned, any character who says, “Unless I specifically inform you otherwise, I am always smoking a cigarette” is inarguably hilarious.
Funniest song?
There’s a song I’ve recently become obsessed with called “Tonight, Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae; it has the line, “I woke up with a strange tattoo and it kinda looks like you mixed with Zach Galifanakis.” You rhymes with tattoo and Galifanakis rhymes with, well, nothing. I essentially laugh every time I hear it, even though I always know it’s coming. His name alone is funny. And picturing him as a tattoo is also funny. But a tattoo that looks like a combination of the girl the song is about and him? Genius.
Funniest quirk you had as a child?
A deep desire to try to set world records. When friends came over to play, instead of, say, starting to play, I’d say, “Want to try to set the record for the longest time spent on a swing set?” We’d call the local papers and then, inevitably, grow bored of whatever record we were trying to set. This is what can happen to a child who watches too much Brady Bunch (Bobby and Cindy tried to set the world teeter totter record).
Funniest thing you heard a kid say?
“The human head weighs eight pounds.” It was Jonathan Lipnicki in Jerry Maguire.
Funniest misunderstanding?
For some reason, what comes to mind is that scene in "There’s Something About Mary" when those cops arrest Ben Stiller and he thinks he’s being questioned about the rest stop that’s actually a secret sex spot for gay men but they’re actually questioning him about all these murders that the guy he’d picked up hitchhiking had committed. I remember howling at that scene and thinking, “Wow, misunderstandings can be hilarious.” True story!
Favorite inside joke you have with anyone you know?
I have a million but I promise they wouldn’t be funny or even make sense if I repeated them—an unfortunate quality of inside jokes.
Favorite comedian?
These days, it’s a tie between Doug Benson and Mark Maron. I’m on a podcast kick and between Doug Loves Movies and Mark’s WTF, I’m constantly entertained. They both have that gift of making virtually anything they’re talking about interesting and funny.
Favorite humorous quote? (from a movie)
“The human head weighs eight pounds.”
Thanks to Anna David for her witty answers to our questions and for sharing her memoir with a lucky reader.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I have to agree with her on the Zack Galifinakis line in "Tonight Tonight!" It took me ages to figure out what they were even saying, haha!
ReplyDeleteMy strange addiction would be...the "making-of" features on Disney DVDs! I don't know what it is, but I LOVE them! And only for the Disney movies! I find myself collecting all of their DVDs now, sigh!
